2011 Weekly Highlights
Week Nine
Varsity
Fenton 20 RB 0
On Friday Oct. 21st, the Varsity team celebrated senior night at Shuey Stadium. In a game between conference rivals, the Bison used a tough defense and many R-B offensive miscues, to win 20-0.
The opening minutes saw the offense move down the field but stall out deep in Fenton territory. The Bison used a few trick plays to score, and while the defense played well, the offense struggled mightily all night. This was not the way we wanted to send out the seniors. A few bright spots for the Bulldogs were, Juniors Joe Odeh and Kevin Garvey. Joe had 2 catches for 40 yards and 2 interceptions on defense. Kevin had a terrific interception in the end zone and 4 tackles including a huge hit on the sideline.
The coaching staff and underclassmen would like to thank the 27 senior players as they have completed their R-B careers. While the final record is not what we wanted, the program is better as you are leaving, than when you entered. We would also like to thank the parents and fans for their continued support throughout the season. A special thank you to all the parents who volunteered their time with team dinners, snack bags, chain crew, etc.
Sophomores
Fenton 26 RB 24
The Sophomore Bulldogs took on the Bison from Fenton Friday night at Shuey Stadium in their last game of the season. The Bulldogs jumped out to 24-8 lead and then struggled to hold on as the Bison fought their way back scoring 18 points, winning 26-24. Despite losing the game, the sophomores won the Metro Suburban title finishing 3-1 in conference and 7-2 overall.
Throughout the course of the season, the sophomores faced and overcame adversity time and again. Regardless of the situation, the Bulldogs played hard and always played until the final buzzer sounded. Led by a tough defensive unit, and an offense that could march up and down the field with ease, the sophomore team showed that they will be an exciting group to watch in the next few years. The coaching staff looks forward to seeing the sophomores develop into an excellent group of varsity players.
The team would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of the parents and fans for their support this season. That support played a big role in this season’s success and in the team accomplishing its goal of winning the Metro Suburban Conference title.
Freshman
Fenton 36 RB 30
The freshman football team had a conference championship in their sights, but came up a bit short. The Bulldogs built a 22 - 8 lead on 2 touchdown connections from Nico Raneiri to Matt Chapp in the 1st half and an early 2nd half TD run by Chapp. Otis Dortch concluded the scoring with a long kick off return for a touchdown that gave RB a short lived 30 - 22 lead. Although there were many chances the Bulldogs could not ge the big play, when needed, to secure the victory. Overall, a great season for the freshman and a great foundation for future varsity success.
Thank you to Mr. & Mrs. Chapp for providing the halftime refreshments.

Varsity
Ridgewood 25 RB 20
On Friday September 23rd, the varsity Bulldogs dug themselves a huge hole, climbed out of the hole, but eventually fell back in. The Bulldogs went down 19-0 in the first half, only to regain the lead 20-19 in the 3rd quarter, but couldn’t hang on as they fell to 1-4 on the season.
Ridgewood returned the opening kickoff 87 yards to the RB 10 yard line and scored on the next play to go up 7-0. The Bulldog offense move the ball all night long, but stymied their own drives with penalties and turnovers. Ridgewood scored twice more in the first half and gained a 19-0 lead midway through the 2nd quarter. The offense got on the board with: 45 left in the half on a 32 yard TD pass from Dylan Beketic (4-9 91 yards) to Joe Odeh (2 catches, 58 yards). The two point conversion try was no good and the Bulldogs trailed 19-6 at half.
The second half began as the Bulldogs drove 65 yards down to the Ridgewood 6 yard line only to be turned away on 4th and 1. The defense forced a 3 and out and the offense rolled down the field and capped the drive with an 11 yard TD run by Tyler Floros (21 carries, 112 yards). Santi Beltran’s kick made it 19-13. The defense again held up and forced a Ridgewood punt. The offense wasted no time as Nick Callahan (19 carries, 142 yards) ripped off two big runs on the drive. Dylan Beketic capped the drive with a 12 yard scamper and Beltran’s kick gave RB the lead 20-19. The lead lasted 2 minutes as Ridgewood’s P.J. O’Connor broke loose for a 54 yard TD.
RB had its chance as the offense marched down the field in the 4th quarter. With 1st and 10 from the Ridgewood 18, things looked good for the Bulldogs. A penalty, a sack, and a dropped 4th down pass ended RB’s chances for the comeback. Defensively, Andy Suzuki had 9 tackles, Nick Callahan had 7, and Justin Agne had 6.
The Bulldogs hope to show more consistency next week as they host the Glenbard South Raiders. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

The sophomores opened conference play taking on the Ridgewood Rebels Friday night in Norridge. In what turned out to be a dogfight, the Bulldogs prevailed 14-0 advancing to 5-0. After opening the game with an almost 9 minute drive, the Rebels were stopped by the Bulldog defense deep in RB territory. The sophomore offense was able to get to work grinding out 95 yards on the ground and 148 yards through the air.
Running back Mike DeMitro had 4 carries for 73 yards including a 56 yard run on a perfectly executed reverse. Quarterback Jack Vandemerkt had the only Bulldog rushing touchdown on the day. The sophomore offense did have some success in the air as Vandemerkt connected with wide receiver Lewis Rogers on a 68 yard touchdown pass late in the first half. Tight end Christian Verdin had an incredible shoe string catch and then turned it into a 57 yard scamper before being brought down inside Rebel territory.
The Bulldog defense got pushed around in the first half by the Rebels before finally digging in and standing their ground. Despite a less than stellar defensive performance, the Bulldogs were able to keep the Rebels out of the endzone on Friday, pitching their 2nd shutout in five games.

RB 42 Rich East 26
On Saturday, the RB freshman football team took to the field in their 1st home game of the year. Four different bulldogs scored touchdowns and huge holes were opened up all day by Kyle Tracy, Paul Sitkiwiecz, Dan Magee, Jordan Petronella, Nick Cundari, Sam Enriquez, Larry Pottle, and Vince Castillo. Matt Chapp turned in yeoman's effort with big runs between the tackles, on the outside, and three succesful 2 - pt conversions. RB 12 Lemont 7
The Bulldog Sophomore Football team improved to 2-0 on Friday with a thrilling 12-7 victory over the Lemont Indians. The win was the team's second come-from-behind victory of the season. The Dogs struggled to move the ball offensively in the first half, gaining just 67 yards of total offense, but a tough RB defense kept the Indians out of the end zone. The teams entered the locker room at halftime tied at 0-0.
In the second half, the Bulldogs took advantage of more great defense, led by Christian Verdin's 3 sacks and an interception by Adolfo Linares. The Dogs opened the scoring, as Justin Agne (4 carries, 36 yards) scored on a 19 yard run up the middle of the Lemont defense. A failed two-point attempt made the score 6-0. The Indians answered though on their next possession to make the score 7-6. The teams battled for field position, but the Bulldog defense again proved to be the key as Verdin stripped the ball from a Lemont ball carrier and recovered it himself, giving the Dogs one last chance with 1:52 left on the clock. Jack Vandermerkt (11/21, 129 yards, 1 TD) led the team down the field, executing a near flawless two-minute drill. Vandermerkt completed a key third down play to Verdin (3 catches, 56 yards), who made a spectacular catch over two Indian defenders for a gain of 34 yards.
After scrambling 8 yards to pick up a first down, Vandermerkt hit Mike Dmitro for the go-ahead score on a 19-yard pass play with just :32 left to play.
The defense held their ground, keeping Lemont out of the end zone on four attempts, sealing the 12-7 victory for the Sophomore Dogs. The team is on the road this weekend, playing Chicago Al-Raby at Hanson stadium this Saturday. Come on out and support your Bulldogs!
Freshman
RB 20 Lemont 8
On Saturday, the Bulldog freshman football team traveled to the rolling hills of Lemont to take on the Indians in search of their first high school victory. After an extremely hot, spirited effort the RB greenhorns got in the win column with a 20 - 8 victory. The victory was a total team effort where every member of the team saw action. The team was lead by Jordan Petronella and an unrelentless defensive effort. Jordan was all over the field, finishing with double digit tackles, making many plays at the line of scrimmage and in the Lemont backfield. Other stalwart efforts were put in by lineman Sam Enriquez, Vince Castillo, Sam Johnson, and Jimmy Nolter, LB's Nico Raneiri and Kevin Fitzgerald, and defensive backs Nick Giurini, Zeke Linares, Dominick Rosa, and Marvin McKenzie. The defensive highlight reel play was turned in by Eshaun Banks. Banks intercepted a Lemont pass attempt in the 2nd quarter and returned it 42 yards to put the Bulldogs up 6 - 0. Jimmy Kunkel connected with Matt Chapp for the successful 2 point conversion and an early 8 - 0 lead. The rest of the game saw very few positive plays for the Indian offense and a constant swarm of Bulldog defenders punishing any and all Indian ball carriers.
The Bulldog offense, took its cue from the defense and put two 2nd quarter scores on the board before the halftime break. A strong push up front all day by Dan Magee, Petronella, Henry Gresik, Enriquez, Paul Sitkiwiecz, Larry Pottle, Johnson, and Kyle Tracy lead to big plays from the RB skill players. The first offensive tally was a short plunge from Giurini that came after a balanced methodical drive of 65 yards. Matt Chapp, Banks, Giurini, and quarterback Jimmy Kunkel all contributed substantial rush gains on the drive and Kunkel connected with TE Sam Johnson for a big 1st down catch. The 2 point attempt by Giurini was shut down inches from the goal line. After a defensive 3 and out, the Bulldogs got the ball back late in the 2nd quarter poised to add their 3rd score on the day. After a great read and pitch by QB Kunkel, RB Matt Chapp took the football in the right flat for a 63 yard touchdown run. It was the second week in a row Chapp has found paydirt from long distance. After a penalty, Zeke Linares barely missed getting his foot in bounds on a pass from Kunkel leaving the score 20 - 0.
The Bulldogs came out of halftime leading 20 - 0 and maintained that lead until less than a minute remained in the contest. All members of the teamed played and contributed in the 2nd half effort. Otis Dortch saw his first action and made a nice catch and run in the 3rd quarter. Tim Walsh stepped in at defensive end and contributed 2 QB sacks. Matt Potts finished the game at MLB and made multiple tackles of Indian ball carriers. All in all, a true team effort ruled the day.
The Bulldogs play 2 games this week and hope to have the continued outstanding support. A special thank you to Mr. & Mrs. Chapp for the halftime Gatorade, orange slices, and granola bars for the athletes. On Tuesday (9/6) the Dogs will be at Argo for a 4:30 kickoff and will continue their traveling ways on Saturday (9/10) as they head south to take on Rich Central for a 10a kickoff. Come cheer on the Bulldogs as we aim for victories 2 and 3!!!!
